A formation of seven C-130J Super Hercules and C-130H Hercules aircraft from five nations conducted a visually striking “elephant walk” on Andersen Air Force Base in Guam on December 14, 2024.
An elephant walk is a USAF term for the taxiing of military aircraft right before takeoff, when they are in close formation.
The display, featuring aircraft from the U.S. Air Force, Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), marked a key moment in support of Operation Christmas Drop 2024 (OCD 24).
The annual humanitarian mission, Operation Christmas Drop, is a hallmark event designed to deliver essential supplies to remote Pacific island communities while strengthening ties between allied and partner nations. The exercise also highlights the capabilities and interoperability of the participating air forces, reinforcing their shared commitment to global stability and regional security.
Established in 1952, Operation Christmas Drop is the longest-running humanitarian airlift operation globally. The initiative involves the delivery of supplies, including food, medicine, and educational materials, to thousands of people living on remote islands in Micronesia, including the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau. The mission leverages C-130 aircraft for their short takeoff and landing capabilities, which are essential for reaching these isolated areas.
Each year, partner nations work in close coordination to load, prepare, and deliver bundles using low-cost, low-altitude (LCLA) air drop techniques. The multinational nature of the operation underscores the collective commitment to fostering regional partnerships and maintaining readiness for real-world contingencies.
The “elephant walk” at Andersen AFB, a parade of fully loaded aircraft taxiing in close formation, is a powerful visual symbol of unity and operational readiness. The event underscores the operational capabilities and logistical coordination required to execute a mission of this scale.
In addition to providing critical aid, OCD 24 reflects broader strategic objectives. The operation aims to enhance trust, promote shared values, and uphold international law within the Indo-Pacific region. By fostering multinational collaboration, Operation Christmas Drop strengthens bonds between allies and partners while advancing stability, security, and prosperity.
“Operation Christmas Drop is a tangible demonstration of how we, as a coalition, prioritize not only military readiness but also our shared commitment to humanity,” said Wing Commander James Walker of the Royal Australian Air Force. “These efforts extend beyond the scope of traditional military operations, reinforcing the values we uphold as a global community.”
As Operation Christmas Drop 2024 continues, the coordinated efforts of the U.S. and partner nations remain a beacon of cooperation and goodwill, showcasing the transformative power of humanitarian aid and joint military collaboration.
