In a poignant moment of remembrance, Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk honored a promise made a year ago to the mother of fallen pilot Andrii Pilshchykov, known by his callsign “Juice.”
The promise, made during a burial ceremony, was fulfilled when Liliya Oleksandrivna, Juice’s mother, sat in the cockpit of an F-16, the very aircraft her son had dreamt of flying.
The emotional event took place on the eve of the first anniversary of the tragic aviation accident that claimed the lives of three Ukrainian pilots, including Juice, on August 25, 2023. Oleschuk expressed his respect for Juice’s legacy, stating, “Today, his mother is in the cockpit of the F-16. She continues her son’s mission and will do everything to strengthen our wings.”
Juice, a well-known figure in the Ukrainian Air Force, was passionate about modernizing the force and advocating for Ukraine to receive advanced fighter jets like the F-16. He participated in numerous international training programs, earning his callsign “Juice” due to his preference for juice over alcoholic beverages during a training exercise.
Despite leaving military service in 2021 due to his frustration with the Soviet-era military system, Juice returned to service following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He quickly resumed flying combat missions, becoming a symbol of Ukrainian resistance. His actions contributed to the legend of the “Ghost of Kyiv.”
