Estonian robots support Ukrainian troops in combat

Estonian military robot maker Milrem Robotics has announced that its THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are actively supporting Ukrainian forces in their fight against Russian aggression.

The Estonian company highlighted the critical role these robotic systems play in aiding troops and reducing risks on the battlefield.

“In Ukraine, our THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles are actively involved on the battlefield, and we remain committed to supporting them,” Milrem Robotics said in a statement. “One important lesson we’ve learned, apart from the challenging circumstances, is that feedback from the front lines is invaluable. We take this feedback seriously and integrate it into our product development process to ensure we provide the best possible support.”

The THeMIS UGVs are designed to perform a variety of roles, enabling soldiers to focus on essential combat tasks. These systems assist Ukrainian forces by facilitating the rapid evacuation of casualties from the point of injury to higher-level medical facilities. They also help reduce the cognitive and physical load on soldiers by carrying extra gear and firepower.

“By allowing robots to perform these tasks, we minimize the risk to personnel and free up valuable resources for other essential operations,” the company added.

The THeMIS platform is known for its versatility, capable of adapting to various mission requirements. In Ukraine, it has been deployed for tasks ranging from logistics support to reconnaissance and casualty evacuation. The platform’s modular design allows it to integrate different payloads, including weaponry and surveillance equipment, making it a valuable asset in dynamic combat environments.

Milrem Robotics emphasized the importance of feedback from the battlefield in refining the THeMIS systems. Insights gained from Ukrainian forces have been instrumental in improving the platform’s durability, functionality, and effectiveness under real-world conditions.

The company’s approach highlights a commitment to not only supporting its systems but also ensuring they evolve to meet the needs of soldiers operating in high-stress environments.
