China’s Type 09IIIB nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) has made a rare appearance in new footage, sparking fresh analysis and interest in the advanced capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).
This is only the third time the new design has been observed from a ground perspective, and the latest sighting offers a clearer glimpse of the submarine’s upgraded features and potential role in China’s growing maritime ambitions.
The footage, reportedly captured under different weather conditions from earlier sightings, shows the vessel with extended masts and flying the Chinese flag. Analysts have noted the improved visual clarity of the submarine, providing more details about its updated design and onboard systems. While the exact location and purpose of the appearance remain unclear, the emergence of the Type 09IIIB highlights Beijing’s continued focus on bolstering its undersea warfare capabilities.
The Type 09IIIB is believed to be an advanced variant of China’s Type 093 Shang-class submarines. Reports suggest that the new design incorporates enhanced stealth capabilities, improved propulsion systems, and upgraded sonar and weaponry to compete with other modern SSNs fielded by global powers.
The submarine is speculated to carry advanced vertical-launch systems capable of deploying a range of anti-ship and land-attack missiles. These features would significantly enhance its ability to operate in contested waters and support China’s broader strategic objectives in the Indo-Pacific region.
Prior to this latest appearance, the Type 09IIIB was only observed in limited still images that left much of its design and features open to speculation. The new footage provides a rare opportunity for defense experts to assess the submarine more comprehensively.
