Allied aircraft monitor Russian border activity

Key Points
  • U.S. and NATO aircraft conducted multiple surveillance and refueling missions across Europe near Russia and Ukraine.
  • Aircraft involved included P-8A Poseidon, RC-135U Combat Sent, E-3A Sentry, B-52H bombers, and KC-135 tankers.

United States and NATO air operations over Europe reached a high tempo this week, with multiple surveillance, reconnaissance, and refueling missions tracked across the continent.

According to data shared by OSINTdefender, several allied aircraft conducted patrols near the borders of Russia and Ukraine as part of ongoing monitoring and deterrence efforts.

A Norwegian Air Force P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft was observed flying northeast toward the Barents Sea, operating close to northern Russia. At the same time, a U.S. Air Force RC-135U “Combat Sent” electronic surveillance aircraft and a NATO E-3A “Sentry” Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft were heading east for routine patrols near Eastern Europe.

In support of those missions, two U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotankers were refueling a pair of B-52H “Stratofortress” long-range bombers over the North Sea, before their flight path shifted toward Finland. Additional aerial activity included French Airbus A330 Multirole Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft departing Istres-Le Tubé Air Base in southern France and moving east toward Romania.

The coordinated air presence underscores NATO’s continued surveillance posture across Europe’s northern and eastern flanks.

These flights, a mix of intelligence-gathering, air refueling, and deterrence missions, reflect routine operational activity but also signal continued readiness amid regional tensions.

As global attention remains fixed on Eastern Europe, each flight reinforces collective defense visibility — both as intelligence gathering and strategic messaging.
