Florida-based Petrel Technologies announced new performance results for its AERO Sky hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, confirming the unmanned system achieved six hours of flight endurance and extended reconnaissance reach during recent testing, the company said in a statement released in February 2026.
According to the company, the hybrid-electric aircraft demonstrated sustained airborne operations capable of covering hundreds of miles while conducting real-time reconnaissance missions. The announcement highlights operational testing milestones for the Group 3 unmanned aerial system currently under development as a low-cost platform designed for defense and security applications.
“Six hours in the air. Hundreds of miles of reach. Real time reconnaissance. The AERO Sky delivers persistent eyes forward with VTOL launch, hybrid electric endurance, and mission configurable payloads. Built to scale,” the company wrote in its announcement describing the test results.
Petrel Technologies said the AERO Sky combines vertical takeoff capability with fixed-wing flight efficiency, allowing the aircraft to operate without traditional runways while maintaining extended endurance once airborne. The hybrid-electric propulsion system is intended to support long-duration intelligence missions where continuous aerial coverage is required.
The aircraft falls within the Group 3 category of unmanned aerial vehicles, which includes larger tactical drones capable of carrying heavier payloads and operating at extended ranges compared with small tactical quadcopters. According to the company, the system is being designed as a low-cost platform to expand access to persistent aerial intelligence.
Petrel describes the AERO Sky as a high-endurance aerial intelligence platform intended for missions “where uptime and reliability matter most,” positioning the aircraft as what the company calls an “aerial pickup truck” aimed at reducing operational risk while extending mission reach.
The company also outlined potential strike applications, stating the platform is designed for “STRIKE — Lethal effects at range,” alongside surveillance and logistics missions. Petrel said the aircraft is built for field deployment, assembled within minutes, and supports modular payload integration with onboard autonomous capabilities.
According to information published on the company’s website, Petrel Technologies focuses on developing American-built systems intended for scalable production across defense, industrial, and commercial sectors. The company stated its goal is to enable mass production of reliable and affordable unmanned tools that extend operator capability across multiple mission environments.
