Turkish defense firm STM Defense Technologies Engineering has delivered its domestically developed Alpagu loitering munition system to Turkish security forces.
Known as a fixed-wing “kamikaze drone,” the Alpagu is part of STM’s broader initiative to supply locally engineered UAVs capable of enhancing national defense capabilities through lightweight, precision-guided strike systems.
STM General Director Özgür Güleryüz said in a Friday statement, “Our family of tactical UAVs, developed with our advanced engineering capabilities to meet the needs of our country, continues to strengthen operational effectiveness in the field.”
He added, “We believe that Alpagu will further enhance our operational effectiveness in the field.”
According to STM, Alpagu was first exported in 2023. The current delivery supports domestic use, reinforcing STM’s intent to field cost-effective loitering munition options to both Turkish and allied forces.

The drone, named after a historic Turkish term meaning “a brave man who attacks the enemy alone,” is optimized for short-range precision strikes. Weighing less than two kilograms and measuring under one meter in length, the system can be deployed and operated by a single soldier. Its airframe and guidance systems are fully developed in-house by STM engineers, with emphasis on reduced radar signature, modularity, and ease of field use.
Alpagu integrates wide-angle electro-optical and infrared imaging payloads, enabling day and night operations across a range of up to 8 kilometers. The drone’s internal algorithms—designed using national image processing and deep learning technologies—support autonomous flight navigation while keeping target selection and strike control under human supervision.
In its operational profile, the system supports tactical missions such as counterterrorism, cross-border engagement, and urban conflict scenarios. With a flight endurance of 15 minutes and a cruise speed of 20 meters per second, Alpagu operates at altitudes between 80 and 200 meters above ground level. Its 270-gram warhead provides terminal effect against fixed and mobile targets.
“Alpagu remains undetected by targets until the final moment, then destroys its target with precision accuracy using its onboard warhead,” STM said in its product description.
The drone includes features such as MIL-STD-331 compliant ammunition safety mechanisms, mission-change capability, and a self-destruct function. The launch and control systems are designed to operate in field conditions, with the ground control unit offering full sunlight readability, water and dust resistance, and MIL-STD-810G compliance.
The system’s mesh communication architecture allows multiple Alpagu platforms to be managed simultaneously from a single station, enabling coordinated missions across land, sea, or airborne environments.
STM states that Alpagu is one of only two loitering munition systems globally that combine this level of operational autonomy and precision targeting in the sub-2kg category.
In STM’s view, this delivery reflects a growing trend in the global defense sector toward lightweight, modular UAV solutions with both surveillance and strike capabilities. The company says continued integration with national platforms and expanding export potential remain key objectives in its UAV development roadmap.
