Japan’s Ministry of Defense has announced the shipment of an additional 30 Self-Defense Forces (SDF) vehicles to Ukraine.
According to a release issued by the ministry on October 14, the shipment includes 28 “1/2-ton trucks” and two high-mobility vehicles, intended for personnel and cargo transport.
The latest delivery brings the total number of SDF vehicles sent to Ukraine to 131. Japan has previously provided various types of support vehicles, including Type 73 Kogata, manufactured by Mitsubishi, along with tracked carriers known as Morooka, designed to move equipment and supplies across difficult terrain.
The Ministry of Defense said the vehicles will aid Ukraine’s operational capacity by enhancing mobility for both troops and material. While Japan remains bound by its pacifist constitution, the government has widened the scope of non-lethal aid to Ukraine, including equipment support, humanitarian assistance, and logistical vehicles.
In a statement, the ministry reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s self-defense efforts, noting that the vehicles are strictly designated for non-combat use, in accordance with Japan’s legal framework.
Japan’s increasing support to Ukraine has also included bulletproof vests, helmets, commercial drones, and medical supplies, in line with policy guidelines that permit the export of defense equipment limited to non-lethal purposes.
Tokyo’s defense aid to Ukraine remains a rare example of military support from a country that has long maintained strict controls on arms exports. However, as Russian missile and drone strikes continue across Ukraine, Japan’s efforts are being viewed as an evolving signal of deeper international alignment with Ukraine’s defense.
