Ukraine launched a coordinated series of deep strikes overnight, damaging a Russian Buyan-M missile corvette operating in Lake Onega and targeting key elements of Moscow’s military infrastructure across several regions, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on October 4.
The Buyan-M — a small missile ship capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles — was struck in the Republic of Karelia. The vessel’s condition remains under assessment.
The Buyan-M class, part of Russia’s Project 21631, is one of the Kremlin’s primary platforms for precision missile strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. These ships have been repeatedly used to launch long-range Kalibr missiles from both the Black Sea and inland waters, often targeting energy systems and civilian areas. Damaging one of these vessels represents a blow to Russia’s strike capabilities and highlights Kyiv’s expanding operational reach.
In a statement, the General Staff confirmed the attack and noted that results are still being clarified. “Also, in the area of Lake Onega, Republic of Karelia, a Buyan-M small missile ship was damaged. The extent of the damage is being clarified,” the statement read.
The strike on the Buyan-M was part of a broader Ukrainian campaign that also included a precision attack on the “Kirishinefteorgsintez” oil refinery in the Leningrad region — one of Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities with an annual capacity of 18.4 million tons. Explosions and fires were reported at the site, and the scale of the damage is still being assessed.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian forces struck a “Garmon” radar complex and a transporter-loader vehicle for an Iskander short-range ballistic missile system in Russia’s Kursk region, disrupting Russian missile launch capabilities. Additionally, a command post belonging to the Russian 8th Army in occupied Donetsk was successfully hit, with Ukrainian forces confirming the target was destroyed.
“The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue a systematic campaign to destroy Russian military facilities and weaken its military and economic potential,” the General Staff said.
