The Czech Defense Ministry has approved a plan to purchase an initial 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from Germany in a deal worth 32.8 billion koruna ($1.6 billion), according to an official statement on the ministry’s website.
If endorsed by the cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the ministry will sign a framework agreement and submit a binding order in the coming weeks. Deliveries are planned between 2028 and 2031. The agreement includes an option for the Czech Republic to acquire an additional 14 Leopard 2A8s should funding be available.
The modernization effort comes as the country replaces older military hardware sent to Ukraine in support of Kyiv’s defense against Russian aggression. Earlier this year, the Czech government approved a plan to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030, up from the 2% NATO requirement it currently meets.
The initial procurement will also be supported by a separate order for 17 armored support vehicles, including armored bridge layers, armored recovery vehicles, engineering vehicles, and driver training variants, with an additional option for two more. When combined with the optional tank purchase, the program could result in a total acquisition of 61 to 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks and support vehicles. Under current plans, the first 44 tanks and 17 support vehicles will be delivered from 2028 to 2031, while the bridge layer vehicles are scheduled for delivery in 2032.
The Czech Leopard 2A8CZ variant will be customized with national requirements, a process officials have referred to as “Bohemianization.” Planned upgrades include integration with the Czech C4ISTAR battle management system, installation of domestic machine guns, vehicle camouflage, and the addition of advanced survivability features such as an active protection system (APS) and mine protection system. The package will also include logistics support, training, and other sustainment measures to ensure full operational capability.
The Leopard 2A8, manufactured by Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann, represents the latest evolution of the Leopard 2 family. It is designed to provide enhanced protection, firepower, and situational awareness while integrating advanced defensive systems to counter modern battlefield threats.
