China unveils robotic tank during test trials

The China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has released new footage of its tracked VU-T10 unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) during recent trials.

The VU-T10 represents a major step in Beijing’s drive to integrate robotics into future battlefields.

The footage, unveiled in a NORINCO promotional video, shows the 11-ton robotic vehicle maneuvering across rugged terrain while engaging targets with its remote-controlled turret. Armed with a 30mm cannon and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, the VU-T10 is also fitted with banks of electrically operated smoke grenade launchers for self-protection.

According to NORINCO, the system offers an option for a pod-mounted Red Arrow 12 anti-tank guided missile, extending its engagement range well beyond the reach of its cannon.

This platform is designed to deliver heavy firepower in support of front-line operations, reducing risk to personnel and enhancing battlefield effectiveness.

The VU-T10 is powered electrically and boasts a maximum road speed of 60 km/h, NORINCO added. Designed to function similarly to an infantry fighting vehicle, the UGV provides fire support and limited transport capability for dismounted troops.

The inclusion of a 30mm cannon underscores its intended versatility. The weapon enables the vehicle to destroy light armored vehicles, engage soft targets, punch through unreinforced structures, and even threaten low-flying drones.

By showcasing platforms like the VU-T10, NORINCO is positioning itself to attract militaries seeking to modernize aging fleets and adopt unmanned systems for high-risk missions.

The company has not disclosed any confirmed export customers for the VU-T10. However, Chinese state media has reported that NORINCO has offered its unmanned systems for international sale at recent defense exhibitions in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
