Russia resumes A-50 Radar plane flights near frontline

Russia has reintroduced its A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft into operations near the frontlines after nearly a year-long pause.

On March 10, an A-50 (registration number RF-50601) was spotted flying over Oryol region, marking the return of these reconnaissance missions. The aircraft is designed to provide intelligence on Ukrainian troop movements and battlefield conditions from behind enemy lines.

The reappearance of the A-50 comes despite previous losses suffered by Russia’s fleet of these critical surveillance aircraft.

On January 14 and February 23, 2024, Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed two A-50s in separate operations.

The return of the A-50 comes at a critical moment, following the U.S. decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine, including shipments of Patriot air defense missiles. The halt in American support has left Ukraine with dwindling stocks of air defense interceptors, creating vulnerabilities in its ability to counter Russian air operations.
