Lithuania’s president warns of potential Russian aggression

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda recently voiced concerns that Russia might resort to aggression towards NATO countries if the West withdraws its support from Ukraine.

In an interview with TV3, President Nauseda emphasized the potential ramifications of halting support to Ukraine, highlighting the intricate interplay between regional tensions and Russia’s strategic behavior.

While assessing the probability of withdrawing support from Ukraine as low, Nauseda underscored that potential aggression by Russia would hinge upon the trajectory of the conflict in Ukraine.

“If Russia fails to turn everything in its favor, then, of course, it will get stuck there for a long time and won’t be able to fight on multiple fronts. If everything goes differently and the West suddenly turns away from Ukraine, not providing the necessary assistance… Yes, then it might happen like that, but the probability of such a scenario is low,” Nauseda remarked, addressing discussions regarding the threat to NATO from Russia.

Nauseda expressed uncertainty about Russia’s future actions and the timing of any potential shift in behavior toward NATO.

This warning follows earlier remarks by top EU diplomat Josep Borrell, who highlighted the peril of a Russian victory over Ukraine for the European Union. He urged greater support for Ukraine, emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no sign of halting full-scale aggression in the near term.
