US Army orders more M109A7 howitzers from BAE Systems

BAE Systems has been awarded a $493 million contract to continue the production of M109A7 Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) and M992A3 Ammunition Carriers for the U.S. Army.

The production and delivery under this contract are slated to occur between August 2025 and July 2026.

The M109A7 provides the Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) with modern artillery capabilities that are highly survivable, maintainable, and responsive on the battlefield.

Dan Furber, director of ground vehicle production for BAE Systems’ Combat Mission Systems business, emphasized, “We are focused on producing and fielding modern artillery capabilities that provide the Army with overmatch in range, accuracy, and lethality.”

The M109A7, one of the lightest tracked SPH systems, is designed with adaptable chassis and next-generation technology, ensuring mission readiness in challenging terrains and conditions. The vehicle’s commonality across the ABCT formation offers low-risk future upgrades, eases logistics, and reduces maintenance costs. This commonality also benefits allied nations operating U.S. military systems, preserving interoperability.

The M109A7 entered full-rate production in 2020, with this latest order bringing the total contract value to nearly $3 billion. BAE Systems has expanded its production and support efforts for the M109A7 and M992A3 to include facilities in Anniston, Alabama, alongside existing operations in York, Pennsylvania; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Sterling Heights, Michigan; Endicott, New York; Elgin, Oklahoma; and Aiken, South Carolina.

This contract ensures that the ABCT will sustain operations with one of the most survivable indirect fire support systems for years to come, reflecting BAE Systems’ commitment to equipping soldiers with mission-ready artillery solutions.
