Ukraine says Patriot intercepted over 140 ballistic missiles

Key Points
  • Ukraine’s Air Force said one Patriot air defense system has intercepted nearly 250 aerial targets, including more than 140 Russian ballistic missiles, according to Militarnyi citing the Air Force Command.
  • The confirmed results highlight the operational role of U.S.-supplied Patriot systems in countering Russian ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainian territory.

One of the Patriot air defense systems operated by Ukraine’s Air Force has destroyed more than 140 Russian ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi, citing the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The same system has intercepted nearly 250 aerial targets in total since entering combat service.

According to the report, the figures were confirmed by the command of the Ukrainian Air Force and reflect combat results achieved by a single Patriot battery deployed to protect critical areas from Russian missile attacks. The system has been used extensively against ballistic, aeroballistic, and cruise missile threats launched by Russian forces.

“At present, we have already destroyed almost 250 targets using Patriot, more than 140 of which were ballistic,” said Patriot battalion commander and Hero of Ukraine Viacheslav Ahieiev in an interview. The quote was published by Militarnyi and attributed to Ukraine’s Air Force Command.

Ahieiev said his unit was the first Ukrainian air defense formation sent to the United States for training on the Patriot system after Ukraine received the platform as part of international military assistance. He stated that the training period was shorter than expected due to the system’s design and automation.

“Three months turned out to be even too much. After ‘manual’ Soviet-era equipment, mastering the modern system was very easy. After three to four weeks, I was already calling the brigade commander: ‘Commander, we know everything. Bring us back to Ukraine — we want to fight,’” Ahieiev said.

The same unit achieved a landmark interception on the night of May 4, 2023, when it shot down a Russian Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missile over the Kyiv region. That interception was the first confirmed combat destruction of the Kinzhal missile, which Russia had previously presented as difficult to intercept.

Patriot is a long-range air and missile defense system designed to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missile threats. In Ukrainian service, the system operates with multiple interceptor types, allowing it to engage targets at extended ranges and at high altitudes. The system has become a central element of Ukraine’s layered air defense network, particularly in defending major cities and critical infrastructure from Russian missile strikes.

Russian forces have continued to rely on ballistic and aeroballistic missiles to attack Ukraine, including Iskander-M, Korean-made KN-23 systems, and air-launched Kinzhal missiles, which are often used to target high-value sites. Ukrainian air defense units have prioritized the interception of these weapons due to their speed and destructive potential.

According to Ukrainian Air Force officials, Patriot batteries have been deployed in high-threat areas and are tasked primarily with countering ballistic missile attacks, while other air defense systems cover cruise missiles and drones. The reported results highlight the role of advanced Western-supplied air defense systems in reducing the impact of Russian long-range strikes.
