Ukraine confirms arrival of first Mirage 2000 jets

Ukraine confirmed that it had received its first Mirage 2000 fighter jets from France.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed the delivery, stating that the aircraft will soon begin combat missions.

“The Ukrainian Air Force has received long-awaited reinforcements—the first French Mirage 2000 and F-16 fighters from the Netherlands. These modern combat aircraft have already arrived in Ukraine and will soon begin carrying out combat tasks, enhancing our defense capabilities and increasing our ability to effectively resist Russian aggression,” Umerov announced.

The delivery of Mirage 2000 jets from France marks what Umerov described as a “strategically important contribution” to Ukraine’s security. The transfer follows an announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron on June 6, 2024, confirming that Mirage 2000 fighters would be sent to Ukraine.

French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu also confirmed that the first Mirage 2000 jets had arrived in Ukraine with Ukrainian pilots onboard, who had undergone months of training in France. “On June 6, 2024, Emmanuel Macron announced the delivery of French Mirage 2000 jets to Ukraine. The first of them arrived today. With Ukrainian pilots trained for several months in France, they will now take part in defending Ukraine’s skies,” Lecornu stated.

Meanwhile, Dutch F-16 fighters are also entering Ukrainian service. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is steadily increasing its fleet of F-16s, and that the Netherlands continues to fulfill its commitments in supporting these efforts.

Strengthening Ukraine’s Air Defense Capabilities
The arrival of these advanced fighter jets is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian air and missile attacks. Both the Mirage 2000 and F-16 bring enhanced interception, air-to-air combat, and ground-attack capabilities, allowing Ukraine to better defend its airspace and conduct offensive operations where necessary.

This delivery follows months of negotiations, training, and logistical preparations, as Ukraine works to modernize its aging Soviet-era air force. Western allies have consistently stressed their long-term commitment to Ukraine’s defense, and this latest reinforcement demonstrates continued military support amid the ongoing war.
