Serbia unveils new heavy rocket system

Serbia has unveiled a new heavy rocket system, the Sumadija/Vila, during its recent “Strength of Unity” military parade.

The system, developed by Yugoimport-SDPR, represents a modular long-range launcher designed to strike high-value targets deep behind enemy lines.

According to information released at the event, the self-propelled launcher can be configured with different payloads depending on mission requirements.

In its primary configuration, the Sumadija system carries a container with two 400 mm ballistic missiles, designated Jerina, each with a range of 300 kilometers and a 250-kilogram warhead. Alongside, a second container holds the Vila-1, described as a heavy loitering munition capable of reaching up to 300 kilometers, orbiting in the target area, and delivering a warhead of up to 450 kilograms.

The Serbian defense company emphasized that the system is intended for engagement against critical enemy targets, including time-sensitive assets. These range from surface-to-surface missile batteries and air defense systems to airports, heliports, military bases, training camps, logistics hubs, ports, command centers, and other key military infrastructure. By combining ballistic missile firepower with loitering munition capability, the system provides both immediate strike capacity and flexible precision engagement.

The launcher is modular in design, allowing operators to tailor payloads for specific missions. The Jerina ballistic missiles deliver long-range destructive capacity, while the Vila-1 munition offers persistence over target areas, enabling operators to strike when conditions are most favorable. This dual-role capability is framed by Yugoimport-SDPR as a response to modern battlefield requirements, where both rapid strikes and adaptive loitering assets are increasingly necessary.

During the parade, the system was highlighted as a new addition to Serbia’s fire support arsenal. Serbian officials described it as a tool to extend the reach of national forces, adding a capability to engage targets across the spectrum of operational depth. With ranges up to 300 kilometers, the system positions Serbia among a limited number of countries fielding domestically developed long-range precision rocket artillery combined with heavy loitering munitions.

The appearance of the Sumadija/Vila system also underlines Serbia’s defense industry ambitions. Yugoimport-SDPR has long served as the country’s primary defense manufacturer, and its unveiling of modular, multi-role systems is intended to both strengthen national capabilities and attract potential export interest.
