Russia develops next-generation anti-tank missile to replace Kornet

The NPO High Precision Systems (“Vysokotochnye Kompleksy”) holding company has announced the development of the next-generation anti-tank missile system with fire and forget capability during the Army-2018 international military and technical forum.

According to the report of the Russian Ministry of Defence’s Zvezda TV channel, the holding company is developing a new generation of missiles for destroying tanks and other types of the armor.

“The holding company’s enterprises are developing next-generation anti-tank missile systems,” the company said in its statement at the Army-2018 international military and technical forum.

The company declined to specify the project’s details and the name of the ongoing work.

Today a tank is the most protected and survivable vehicle on the battlefield. Modern tanks feature multi-layered armor made of various materials and explosive reactive armor. Also, active protection systems are being developed for tanks to shoot down incoming missiles and shells. In modern conflicts, tanks withstood several hits from anti-tank missile systems.

Some experts reported that a Russian defense company is trying to develop similar to Javelin anti-tank systems for replacing Kornet.

In addition, in mid-2016, the Chief of the Russian Armed Forces’ Missile Troops and Artillery Lieutenant-General Mikhail Matveyevsky said that has already been planned the development of a new anti-tank missile complex with fire and forget capability.

He also clarified that the development of ATGM “goes in the direction of improving combat performance, noise immunity of missiles, automating the control of anti-tank systems and increasing the power of warheads.”
