Israeli Merkava tank saved by Trophy system from Hezbollah missile

Iran-backed Hezbollah militants released a video claiming that it had successfully launched an Almas anti-tank missile at an Israeli Merkava tank.

However, defense analysts and military experts quickly noted that the Merkava’s Trophy Active Protection System (APS) effectively neutralized the threat, demonstrating its advanced defensive capabilities.

The video, shared widely on social media platforms, depicts the moment the missile approaches the Merkava tank. Joe Truzman, an analyst closely monitoring the situation, highlighted key moments in the footage. “Hezbollah’s Almas missile targets a Merkava tank. You can see what appears to be the defensive system on the tank engage before the feed ends. One of the tank crew can also be seen ducking his head,” Truzman noted.

The Trophy APS, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, is designed to detect and intercept incoming projectiles. In the released video, the system can be seen identifying the missile and deploying countermeasures to prevent it from striking the tank. The system’s sensors and radar components detect threats in real-time, providing the tank crew with critical warnings and activating protective measures.

One notable observation was made by a user on the social media platform X, known by the handle “Tank Posting.” The user described the incident as “one of the best real-life demonstrations of the APS detecting a top attack missile, lowering the shields and swinging the two heads towards the threat. Trophy even warned the commander early enough so he could duck inside to avoid shrapnel.”

The Trophy system has been a key component of Israel’s armored vehicle defense strategy, providing a crucial layer of protection against a variety of anti-tank threats.

The effectiveness of the Trophy APS in this case not only reaffirms its capability but also emphasizes the ongoing technological advancements in military defense systems.
