Elbit Systems Ltd. has secured new contracts worth approximately $210 million from the Israel Ministry of Defense to modernize the Israeli Army’s fleet of Merkava main battle tanks.
The company announced the multi-year agreement on November 18, stating that the upgrades will extend the operational life of the armored platforms and improve their battlefield effectiveness.
According to the company, the contract will span six years and cover comprehensive modernization of electronic assemblies and onboard systems within the tanks. Elbit Systems says the upgrades will include advanced electro-optical sights, enhanced targeting technologies, and integrated AI features to support improved day and night operations.
In a statement, Elbit Systems said, “Under these contracts, Elbit Systems will carry out an extensive renewal of the electronic assemblies of the tanks to extend their operational service life, as well as the upgrade and enhancement of multiple onboard systems.”
Among the upgrades are “high‑performance, lightweight, AI‑enhanced electro‑optical sights that provide panoramic day‑ and night‑time observation, along with advanced target detection, acquisition, and tracking capabilities,” the company added. The package also includes spare parts and long-term maintenance and support services.
The Merkava tank, developed by Israel Military Industries, serves as the backbone of Israel’s armored corps and has undergone several major upgrade cycles over the past four decades. The new effort builds on existing modernization work and is expected to support broader force readiness across the Israel Defense Forces.
Elbit Systems, which provides defense electronics, unmanned systems, and advanced communications technologies to clients around the world, described the award as part of a broader collaboration with the Ministry of Defense.
“Elbit Systems is proud to continue serving as a key partner of the Israel Ministry of Defense and the Israel Defense Forces in advancing their technological capabilities,” said Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems. “These new contracts reflect our ongoing commitment to providing cutting‑edge solutions that enhance the operational effectiveness and survivability of Israel’s armored platforms.”
The Israel Ministry of Defense has not disclosed how many tanks will be included in the upgrade program. The enhancements are likely to affect multiple variants of the Merkava series currently in service, including the latest Merkava Mk. 4 and newer Mk. 4 Barak platforms.
