Chinese Scorpion drone flies near Okinawa

A Chinese TB-001 Scorpion reconnaissance and attack drone conducted a surveillance mission near Okinawa on Monday, July 8th.

The drone, which took off from the East China Sea, passed between Okinawa’s main island and Miyako Island, circled over the Pacific Ocean, and then retraced its path back to the East China Sea. This maneuver prompted a swift response from Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), which scrambled fighters from the Southwestern Air Defense Force to monitor the drone’s activity.

The TB-001, developed by Tengoen, a company established in 2016, is a medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle. It features a dual-engine setup, with each engine driving a single propeller positioned on either side of the central fuselage under its straight, high-mounted main wing. This configuration allows the drone to carry a diverse array of weapons, enhancing its capabilities for both reconnaissance and attack missions.

At the 2018 Zhuhai Airshow, TB-001 was showcased alongside the C-701/K anti-ship missile and the CM-502 air-to-surface missile. Chinese media reports indicate that the drone can also be equipped with the 40-pound AR-2 and 160-pound AR-4 air-to-surface missiles, as well as the 200-pound AR-3 cruise missile. This diverse armament suite underscores the TB-001’s versatility in both surveillance and combat roles.

One of the drone’s notable features is its capability for full beyond-line-of-sight operations, allowing it to conduct missions at extended ranges without direct line-of-sight communication. This capability significantly enhances its operational flexibility and effectiveness in various mission profiles.

The incursion of the TB-001 into the airspace near Okinawa comes amid heightened tensions in the region. The East China Sea has been a focal point of military activity and strategic posturing by China, Japan, and other regional powers. The deployment of advanced drones like the TB-001 is part of China’s broader strategy to enhance its reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities, while also demonstrating its technological advancements in unmanned systems.
