BAE Systems delivers 1,000th THAAD seeker

BAE Systems has announced the delivery of its 1,000th infrared seeker for the U.S. Army’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) program.

The delivery was made to Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for THAAD, for integration onto the interceptor missile.

The seeker provides advanced sensing and guidance that allows the missile to detect, track, and destroy incoming ballistic threats.

BAE Systems said it has been designing and producing the seeker technology since the program’s inception. Using its infrared sensors, THAAD interceptors are able to identify warheads and destroy them with kinetic impact, both inside and outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

“At BAE Systems, we support our nation and its allies with the most advanced capabilities and technologies,” said Neeta Jayaraman, product line director for Precision Guidance and Sensing Solutions at BAE Systems. “The 1,000th THAAD seeker delivery reinforces our collaboration with Lockheed Martin and showcases our ability to deliver reliable next-generation targeting systems on time, enhancing precision-strike capabilities to counter emerging threats.”

The THAAD system is designed to counter short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats. Its sensor suite is considered among the most advanced of its kind, providing interceptors with precision targeting in a range of operational environments.

Lockheed Martin also underscored the achievement, pointing to the system’s role in current global security challenges.

“The strategic importance of the combat-proven THAAD Weapon System in defending our nation and its allies has never been more globally highlighted than in recent months,” said Dawn Golightly, vice president for Upper-Tier Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Lockheed Martin. “Our production team and suppliers remain committed in their support of THAAD’s mission, and we look forward to our continued partnership with BAE Systems and our valued supply chain network.”

BAE Systems’ seeker technology is produced at its facilities in Nashua, New Hampshire, and Endicott, New York. The company emphasized that the achievement reflects both its skilled workforce and robust supply chain, which together allow it to meet demanding production schedules for the U.S. military and allied customers.

The company noted that it has more than four decades of experience in developing seeker technology for precision-guided munitions. That expertise, combined with investments in advanced design and manufacturing, has positioned BAE Systems as a key contributor to U.S. missile defense efforts.

The THAAD system, which has been deployed by the United States and allied nations, is a central component of layered missile defense architectures. Its ability to engage threats in both the endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric domains provides commanders with flexibility and coverage against a range of missile classes.
