Lockheed opens Alabama factory to build America’s next missile shield

Lockheed Martin opened a purpose-built missile production facility in Courtland, Alabama on Monday dedicated entirely to manufacturing the Next Generation Interceptor, the missile that will eventually replace the aging Ground-Based Interceptors currently guarding the United States against ballistic missile attack from Alaska and California.

The 88,000-square-foot Missile Assembly Building 5 represents a concrete physical step in the Golden Dome for America program, the Department of War’s effort to build a next-generation layered missile defense shield, with the director of that program attending the inauguration to underscore the national security weight of what is being built in northern Alabama.

The interceptors that MAB-5 will produce are designed to address a specific and consequential vulnerability. The current Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, deployed at Fort Greely, Alaska and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, uses interceptors first fielded in the early 2000s against an intercontinental ballistic missile threat that has grown considerably more sophisticated since then. North Korea has tested missiles capable of reaching the continental United States with increasing reliability and demonstrated the ability to deploy multiple warheads and decoys that challenge older interceptor guidance systems. The NGI is designed from the outset to defeat those more complex threats, using an open architecture that can be updated as the threat evolves rather than requiring the entire interceptor to be replaced when adversaries develop new countermeasures.

Gen. Mike Guetlein, who directs the Golden Dome for America program, attended the facility opening and described what MAB-5 represents in terms that went beyond the standard ribbon-cutting language: “You are not just building infrastructure, you are building the Arsenal of Freedom. We are moving with purpose, with urgency, and we are moving out…we are forging the shield to secure the Homeland together.”

Guetlein added specific framing for what the Golden Dome program is actually building: “Golden Dome for America is real, and it is not theoretical. We are building it right now in Courtland. We are taking proven, world-class capabilities, combining them with next-generation space-based tracking and advanced interceptors, and fusing them together with Artificial Intelligence.”

The manufacturing philosophy embedded in MAB-5 reflects hard lessons from decades of complex defense production programs. The facility draws best practices from two of Lockheed Martin’s most demanding production programs: THAAD, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system that has proven its capability in multiple operational deployments including the interception of ballistic missiles over Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and hypersonics programs that push manufacturing tolerances to the limits of current industrial capability. The digital twin methodology the facility employs creates a virtual replica of each interceptor that mirrors its physical counterpart throughout production, allowing engineers to identify discrepancies between design intent and actual hardware before they become defects in finished weapons. That approach, well-established in commercial aviation but still maturing in defense manufacturing, reduces the rework and quality escapes that drive cost and schedule overruns in complex programs.

Christopher Jewell, NGI vice president and program manager at Lockheed Martin, described how the interceptor’s architecture differs from its predecessors in ways that matter for long-term capability: “Think of this as deterrence through defense. It sends a clear signal that threats can be detected, tracked and defeated before they ever reach their intended target.”

Jewell elaborated on the modular design philosophy that makes NGI meaningfully different from the GBI it will eventually replace: “NGI was designed from the start to adapt. Its digital foundation allows new technologies to be integrated more quickly, ensuring the system can stay ahead of emerging threats.”

The specific upgrade capability Jewell referenced, performing technology insertions while the missile remains in its silo rather than removing and replacing the entire interceptor, addresses one of the most expensive and operationally disruptive aspects of maintaining ground-based missile defense. The existing GBIs require removal from their silos for significant upgrades, which takes each interceptor offline for months and imposes significant cost on a system where every interceptor represents a meaningful fraction of the total national defensive capacity. An interceptor that can accept upgrades in place maintains continuous readiness while still benefiting from technology improvements as the threat evolves.

The facility’s design philosophy of aligning the factory to the product from the earliest stages of development addresses a pattern that has plagued defense manufacturing: production lines designed after the weapon is already in development frequently cannot achieve the tolerances, throughput rates, or quality levels that the weapon’s performance specifications require, necessitating expensive retrofits or process changes that delay initial production. By building MAB-5 explicitly around the NGI’s requirements, Lockheed Martin is betting that the upfront investment in purpose-specific manufacturing infrastructure will pay dividends in production efficiency and quality as the program scales.

Lockheed Martin’s presence in northern Alabama dates to 1963 and active production in Courtland to 1994, giving the company three decades of accumulated manufacturing expertise and workforce development in the region. The addition of Troy, Alabama facilities to support NGI production through hardware integration creates an Alabama-based production ecosystem for one of the most strategically consequential weapons in the American arsenal, concentrating the industrial capability for homeland ballistic missile defense in a single state with the workforce depth and institutional knowledge to sustain it.
