The United States Army has awarded Colt’s Manufacturing almost $41 contract to produce M4 and M4A1 carbines for Foreign Military Sales to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, Macedonia, and Tunisia, according to a contract notice released this week.
The award, issued to Colt’s West Hartford, Connecticut-based operations, carries a total cumulative face value of $40,863,564 and is scheduled to run through March 31, 2031. The Army Contracting Command in Newark, New Jersey.
For recipient countries, access to the M4 family supports interoperability with U.S. and NATO-aligned forces while standardizing training, logistics, and ammunition supply around the widely used 5.56mm platform.
Work locations and funding will be determined with each individual order placed under the contract, indicating that deliveries are expected to be phased over several years rather than executed as a single shipment. The extended timeline through 2031 suggests a sustained procurement and support window tied to long-term force development requirements in the listed partner states.
The M4 carbine is one of the most widely fielded infantry weapons in service globally and is derived from the earlier M16 rifle family, itself based on the original AR-15 platform. Designed as a shorter and lighter alternative to the M16A2, the M4 offers improved maneuverability for infantry, mechanized forces, and special operations units operating in confined or urban environments.
The standard M4 is configured with semi-automatic fire and three-round burst capability, while the M4A1 variant includes a fully automatic firing mode and a removable carrying handle mounted on a Picatinny rail, allowing for the integration of modern optics, aiming devices, and mission-specific accessories.
That modularity has made the M4A1 especially suitable for contemporary military operations where troops often require adaptable weapon configurations for close-quarters combat, mounted patrols, and dismounted infantry missions.
