U.S. Forces recover MQ-9 drone from waters off South Korea

United States Forces Korea have recovered an MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft that went down off South Korea’s west coast last month.

According to U.S. Forces Korea, the U.S. Air Force’s 8th Fighter Wing successfully located and recovered the MQ-9 Reaper from waters near Maldo Island, off the coast of Gunsan, following the Nov. 24 incident. The recovery effort involved close coordination with South Korea’s Navy and Coast Guard, which assisted in locating and lifting the wreckage from the seabed.

A U.S. military official said the aircraft, assigned to Kunsan Air Base, experienced a communications failure while conducting what was described as a routine mission. As a result, the MQ-9 was deliberately brought down in a controlled manner over the sea to reduce risk to people and infrastructure on land.

U.S. Forces Korea said the recovered aircraft will undergo a detailed technical analysis to determine the precise cause of the failure. Officials stressed that no personnel were injured and that the incident did not involve hostile action.

Flight operations involving MQ-9 Reapers in South Korea remain ongoing. “MQ-9 flights have not been suspended,” the 8th Fighter Wing told The Korea Times. “While the incident is under investigation, all flights will continue with increased awareness and safety commitments, ensuring proactive resolution of any potential issues,” the unit said in a statement.

Officials familiar with the recovery operation said the salvage timeline was accelerated due to security concerns surrounding the crash site. In particular, U.S. and South Korean authorities were wary that China could attempt to access the downed aircraft using unmanned underwater vehicles, potentially allowing Beijing to obtain sensitive technologies from the wreckage. The recovery was completed before any such access could occur, officials said.

Developed by General Atomics, the MQ-9 Reaper is a long-range intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike unmanned aircraft. The platform measures about 10.9 meters in length with a wingspan of nearly 19.8 meters and can remain airborne for up to 14 hours. It is capable of carrying laser-guided bombs and air-to-ground missiles, allowing it to conduct persistent surveillance while retaining precision strike capability.

South Korean media have estimated the value of a single MQ-9 system at roughly 400 billion won, or about $300 million, though U.S. officials have not confirmed a specific cost figure for the aircraft involved in the crash.

Despite the loss of one aircraft, U.S. officials emphasized that the remaining MQ-9s assigned to the unit continue to operate as planned. The command did not disclose whether the downed Reaper was carrying weapons at the time of the incident.
