Alta Ares interceptor drone successfully tested in France

Key Points
  • A Ukrainian-based interceptor built by Alta Ares was the only system to down a target drone during NATO tests in France.
  • The Pixel Lock AI system enables autonomous tracking and neutralization without human input.

During NATO counter-drone trials in France, an interceptor built on Ukrainian technology became the only system to successfully neutralize a target drone amid storm conditions, Militarnyi reported.

The testing took place at the Biscarrosse range operated by the French defense procurement agency, where multiple interceptors were evaluated under live conditions.

Although the exercise had been planned for fair weather, organizers decided not to postpone it despite a storm sweeping through the area. According to Militarnyi, only the Alta Ares interceptor achieved a successful intercept of the simulated hostile drone.

NATO said the interceptor program “is being developed by companies from member states together with the innovative defense sector of Ukraine, with the support of experts from the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” Ukrainian specialists, the statement added, are actively participating in the trials to ensure the system meets battlefield requirements.

Each Alta Ares interceptor variant offers short-, medium-, or long-range capabilities and is equipped with the company’s Pixel Lock system — an artificial intelligence algorithm that autonomously identifies, tracks, and neutralizes targets without direct human control. The technology is already being adapted for Ukrainian units engaged in countering FPV drones and guided aerial bombs.

The interceptor itself was designed specifically to defeat Shahed/Geran-type loitering munitions frequently used by Russian forces. Previously produced by five Ukrainian companies, this class of drone will now also be built by Alta Ares, which has opened its own production line in western France. The company says the move is intended to “strengthen European defense sovereignty and increase responsiveness,” adding that production will be fully internationalized in France with continued input from Ukrainian engineers and combat feedback from the battlefield.

For defense analysts, the result of the NATO trials underscores how Ukrainian combat experience is shaping Western counter-drone innovation. Performance in adverse weather, where only one system succeeded, highlights the value of robust targeting and guidance algorithms. It also reflects the growing role of Ukrainian-developed technologies in Europe’s evolving defense ecosystem.
