Ukraine to get radar planes from Sweden

The Ukrainian military will soon enhance its surveillance capabilities with the acquisition of two S100D / ASC 890 AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft from Sweden.

The announcement was made on May 30, 2024, as part of Sweden’s largest military aid package to Ukraine, totaling 1.16 billion euros.

These radar aircraft, known for their ability to detect and track aerial targets over long distances, will significantly boost Ukraine’s air defense and reconnaissance operations.

The transfer of these aircraft is expected to temporarily lower Sweden’s defense capabilities, but the country plans to mitigate this by procuring newer Globaleye AEW&C aircraft from Saab.

This strategic support underscores the growing defense collaboration between Sweden and Ukraine, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in the region.

The Saab 340 based AEW&C aircraft are equipped with sophisticated radar systems capable of monitoring vast areas and providing critical early warning and situational awareness. These capabilities are crucial for enhancing Ukraine’s defense posture against potential aerial threats from Russian cruise missiles and suicide drones.

This move follows recent decisions by other countries, such as Poland, to acquire similar systems from Sweden, highlighting the increasing demand for advanced airborne surveillance solutions in Europe. As Ukraine integrates these aircraft into its defense forces, they are expected to play a pivotal role in the country’s ongoing efforts to safeguard its airspace and national security.
