Ukraine unveils new uncrewed surface vessel

The Security Service of Ukraine, known by the acronym SBU, has introduced its latest unmanned surface vessel (USV) designed to operate as a potent tool in the strategic maritime theater.

Named after the legendary figure from Ukrainian folklore, the Mamay stands as a high-speed, explosives-equipped craft, boasting a top speed of up to 110 kilometers per hour, a notable feature highlighted in the SBU’s announcement.

Resembling its predecessors, the Mamay embodies the discreet nature of previous Ukrainian USVs, equipped with optical sensors and remote communication capabilities beyond direct line-of-sight, allowing for remote control.

A distinct radome-like structure on the Mamay houses a satellite communication antenna, enabling precise targeting capabilities even across vast distances, a significant asset in modern naval warfare tactics.

The SBU emphasized that these unmanned surface vessels have fundamentally shifted the paradigm of maritime military operations. According to the SBU, these drones are locally manufactured, underscoring Ukraine’s self-reliance in their production, without external involvement.

These drones serve a critical role, targeting vital infrastructure and enemy military vessels in the occupied territories of Crimea and the Black Sea waters.
