U.S. Army uses upgraded Warfighter Information Network-Tactical Increment 2 in Iraq

The upgraded Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) Increment 2 on M-ATV high-protection medium tactical vehicle was spotted near Mosul in Iraq. The US forces in the area are providing advice and assistance to Iraqi units battling to retake Mosul. One of their key tasks is to help Iraqi units targeting ISIS strongholds.

WIN-T provides Army field units down to the battalion level with secure high-speed, high-capacity voice, data and video communications capabilities heretofore only available to higher formations with large, fixed infrastructure.

WIN-T Increment 2 provides networking on-the-move capability down to the company level and even individual tactical vehicles. The Increment 2 system employs military and commercial satellite connectivity and line-of-sight radio antennas to achieve end-to-end connectivity and dynamic networking operations. Special software allows for the creation of completely ad-hoc, self-forming, self-healing networks. It provides soldiers with communications even as fixed infrastructure was removed.

WIN-T Increment 2

Increment 2 includes Tactical Communications Nodes Combined, Points of Presence, Vehicle Wireless Packages, and Soldier Network Extensions. Special communications gear such as Secure Internet Protocol Router and CENTRIX is embedded in select warfighting platforms.

WIN-T Increment 2 provides the U.S. Army with a capability for tactical C3 greater than that available to any Army in the world.
