The British defense giant unveiled BlackThorn, a new family of modular warheads built specifically for the current wave of cheap, mass-produced weapons reshaping modern warfare, from autonomous drones and one-way attack munitions to counter-drone interceptors, missiles and unmanned ground vehicles.
BAE Systems designed the warhead family to be modular, meaning the same core technology can be configured for different jobs depending on what a customer needs to destroy, and the company built it around three caliber options, 40 mm (1.6 in), 70 mm (2.8 in) and 120 mm (4.7 in), that can be swapped across different platforms rather than forcing manufacturers to design a new warhead from scratch for every new weapon system. That modularity extends to the kind of damage each version does. BlackThorn’s architecture supports blast, fragmentation, multi-purpose and anti-armor effects, giving a single family of warheads the range of a much larger and more expensive inventory without the cost and logistics burden of stockpiling separate weapon types for separate threats.
BlackThorn has already landed a customer, and BAE Systems is presenting the deal as proof the new warhead can move from concept to integration quickly. The company selected BlackThorn for integration into the Mark I, a short-range air defense missile built by Frankenburg Technologies, an Estonian missile manufacturer that has become one of Europe’s fastest-moving names in low-cost air defense since it was founded to counter the kind of drone threats now filling the skies over Ukraine.
The Mark I is a compact, solid-fuel interceptor with a range under 2 km (1.2 miles), designed to shoot down Class I through III unmanned aerial systems, the military’s tiered classification for smaller drones, including slow propeller-driven threats flying around 150 to 200 km/h (93 to 124 mph) and faster jet-powered one-way attack drones in the 400 to 650 km/h (249 to 404 mph) range, a category that includes Russia’s Shahed drones, among the most persistent threats to Ukrainian cities. Frankenburg has said its goal is to reach production of around 100 Mark I missiles a day, or roughly 10,000 a year, at a fraction of the cost of comparable interceptors, and the company has already secured a UK Ministry of Defence contract to help build that manufacturing capacity domestically under Britain’s Low-Cost Air Defence Effectors program.

The BlackThorn integration follows a formal collaboration agreement BAE Systems and Frankenburg signed earlier this year, and it gives Frankenburg’s missile a warhead built by a company with decades of experience in energetic materials, the chemical compounds that provide a warhead’s explosive force, and fuzing, the mechanism that determines exactly when and how a warhead detonates. That combination of an established warhead specialist and a fast-moving missile startup reflects a broader pattern taking shape across European defense procurement, where legacy manufacturers are increasingly partnering with newer, leaner companies to move munitions from concept to battlefield faster than either could manage alone.
“BlackThorn combines decades of expertise in warhead design, energetic materials and fuzing with our proven experience in delivering high-volume munitions to demonstrate a new way of thinking about payloads for a range of platforms that meet the demands of the modern battlefield,” said Scott Jamieson, managing director of BAE Systems’ Maritime and Land Defence Solutions.
“This innovation provides an advanced, affordable solution that meets the evolving needs of our customers and delivers multi-role warheads for the next generation of attritable platforms, missiles, autonomous platforms and counter drone capability at pace to stay ahead of emerging threats,” Jamieson said.
