Germany has financed an additional 15,000 STRILA interceptor drones for Ukraine’s National Guard under a new support package that also includes training, logistics, and further development, the German Embassy in Ukraine said Monday.
“Another 15,000 STRILA interceptor drones produced in Ukraine with German funding for the National Guard of Ukraine. The multi-million agreement also provides training, logistics support and further UAV development. Funding is provided by Germany, supporting Ukraine in countering Russia’s aggression,” the embassy said.
The STRILA system is developed by WIY DRONES and is described as a missile-type interceptor UAV designed to engage high-speed and maneuvering aerial targets. These include Shahed-136 and Shahed-131 drones, reconnaissance fixed-wing UAVs, and other attack drones.
According to the developer, the platform is intended to provide stand-off protection for positions, units, and critical infrastructure by intercepting threats before they reach defended areas.
The system is designed for rapid launch and high closing speed, enabling it to engage targets within a short reaction window. Integration with WIY software and external targeting sources, including radar, provides operators with real-time guidance on target direction, altitude, and speed.
This reduces the time between detection and engagement and lowers operator workload in high-tempo environments where multiple threats may appear at once.
The STRILA interceptor has a tactical radius of 14 kilometers and a maximum flight range of up to 28 kilometers with payload. It can operate at altitudes of up to 5,000 meters and reach speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. The system carries a payload of up to 500 grams and has a maximum flight time of about 10 minutes.
These characteristics place STRILA in a class of lightweight interceptor drones designed for rapid response rather than long-endurance missions, focusing on speed and interception capability.
The use of interceptor drones has expanded alongside broader drone warfare trends, with Ukraine increasingly employing layered air defense combining traditional systems, electronic warfare, and drone-based interception.
