  • Images and video show the vehicle being evacuated to the rear, marking the first confirmed equipment loss in the latest phase of the conflict.

Cambodian military forces have captured a Thai Army BTR-3E1 armored vehicle near the Thai-Cambodian border, marking the first confirmed battlefield trophy of the latest phase of fighting between the two countries.

Photos circulating on social media show soldiers from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces posing alongside a BTR-3E1 infantry fighting vehicle after it was abandoned by its crew during fighting near a roadway close to the border. Additional footage published a day later appears to show the same vehicle being towed away by Cambodian forces and evacuated to the rear.

The incident follows reports that Thai troops were forced to withdraw under fire, leaving the armored vehicle behind. The circumstances surrounding the abandonment have not been officially detailed by either side, but the available imagery suggests the vehicle was intact when captured.

The BTR-3E1, manufactured by Ukraine’s state-owned defense industry and operated by the Royal Thai Army, is an 8×8 armored personnel carrier designed for troop transport, fire support, and reconnaissance missions. The vehicle is armed with a 30mm automatic cannon, a coaxial machine gun, and anti-tank guided missile capability, depending on configuration. Thailand has operated the BTR-3 family for more than a decade as part of its mechanized infantry forces.

The capture of the BTR-3E1 comes amid renewed tensions and military activity along the Thai-Cambodian border, where both sides have reinforced positions following a series of confrontations. While sporadic clashes have occurred in the past, the current phase has seen the first confirmed loss of major ground equipment.

Abandoned BTR-3E1 of Thai Army.

On 15 December, Thailand’s First Army Region reported that recovery teams successfully returned to the site and extracted the BTR-3E1, bringing it back under Thai control. The recovery operation was completed without further escalation.

This development follows earlier reports that Thailand lost a Chinese-made VT-4 main battle tank during operations. Thai Army officials acknowledged that the VT-4 was damaged after sustained firing, with the gun reportedly failing during intensive use. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, according to Thai military statements.

The border region between Thailand and Cambodia has long been a sensitive area due to unresolved territorial disputes and the presence of key infrastructure and population centers. Both governments have periodically accused each other of provocations, while publicly stating that they seek to avoid escalation.

Editor’s Note:
This story has been updated to reflect a statement from the Thai military, which denied that the BTR-3 armored vehicle was seized or captured by Cambodian forces. Thai officials said the vehicle became immobilized during operations near the border and was later successfully recovered by Thai troops.
