Russia has released footage showcasing the operation of its anti-aircraft towers, resembling the Flakturm structures used by Nazi Germany, against Ukrainian suicide drones in the Moscow region.
The Russian media displayed these towers in action, targeting the drones that have increasingly threatened the capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed the effectiveness of the city’s air defense, noting that Russian forces successfully intercepted and shot down ten Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were “flying towards Moscow.” He detailed the incidents on Telegram, reporting that the drones were brought down in the Podolsk district, located south of Moscow. “No casualties or damage have been reported,” Sobyanin stated, emphasizing the scale of the attack as one of the largest in recent times.
These anti-aircraft positions, fortified with Pantsir-S1 systems atop tall structures, first appeared about a year ago. The elevated platforms extend the radar’s field of view, significantly enhancing the system’s ability to detect and engage low-flying targets at a greater range. The idea of positioning defense systems on towers is not new; it mirrors the strategic defense tactics employed by Nazi Germany during World War II. The Flaktürme, or Flak Towers, were large, above-ground fortresses designed to protect against Allied air raids.

The recent deployment of these modern-day Flakturm-style defenses reflects Russia’s continued efforts to fortify its airspace against increasing threats from Ukrainian forces.
