China’s winter drills focus on future warfare

An armored brigade from the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) 78th Group Army, Northern Theater Command, conducted winter drills showcasing enhanced camouflage techniques and counter-drone systems.

The exercise highlighted the brigade’s commitment to adapting to modern battlefield challenges, particularly the threats posed by first-person view (FPV) drones.

The drills featured Type 99A main battle tanks and ZBD-04A infantry fighting vehicles, both outfitted with winter-style camouflage systems, including paint schemes and netting. Additionally, the tanks were equipped with compact anti-drone cope cages designed to counter low-cost FPV drones, a threat increasingly seen in conflicts worldwide. The unit maneuvered in a snow-covered landscape, emphasizing operational readiness in extreme environments.

The PLAGF’s focus on anti-drone measures reflects a growing concern within militaries globally. The integration of small anti-drone cages on the 99A tanks demonstrates a tactical response to FPV drones’ ability to deliver precise strikes against vulnerable points on armored vehicles.

The ZBD-04A infantry fighting vehicles also featured advanced netting systems that disrupted visual targeting systems. This adaptation underscores the unit’s intent to blend into varied terrains, further enhancing survivability in contested zones.

The Northern Theater Command is responsible for operations in China’s northernmost regions, where harsh winter conditions present unique operational challenges. The drills tested the brigade’s ability to execute maneuvers in freezing temperatures while maintaining equipment efficiency and troop morale.
