Kazakhstan reveals production of Barys 6×6 armored vehicles

Key Points
  • Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering revealed serial production of the Barys 6×6 armored vehicle, a locally manufactured variant of the South African Mbombe 6 platform.
  • The MRAP-class vehicle is designed to carry two crew members and eight troops while providing protection against mines, improvised explosive devices, and ballistic threats.

Kazakhstan’s defense industry has revealed serial production of the Barys 6×6 armored combat vehicle at the Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering facility, showcasing locally manufactured mine-resistant vehicles designed for military and security operations.

The vehicle represents a localized version of the South African Mbombe 6 platform adapted for use by the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan.

The unveiling of the production line highlights Kazakhstan’s effort to develop domestic armored vehicle manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on imported military equipment. The country has pursued technology transfer agreements in order to build advanced armored platforms locally while adapting them to national military requirements.

Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering, the company responsible for producing the vehicles, manufactures modern wheeled armored platforms designed to withstand mines and ballistic threats. The Barys 6×6 vehicle uses next-generation Mine Resistant Ambush Protected technology intended to protect crews from landmines, improvised explosive devices, and other battlefield hazards.

The Barys platform is derived from the Mbombe 6 armored vehicle originally developed by South Africa’s Paramount Group. The design was adapted and localized for Kazakhstan’s armed forces through technology transfer and domestic manufacturing.

Kazakhstan is the only country in Central Asia that has implemented a full technology transfer program for MRAP-class armored vehicles. Local production allows the country to manufacture and support armored platforms within its own industrial base.

According to information released by the manufacturer, the Barys 6×6 vehicle is designed to combine high levels of mine protection with relatively compact vehicle dimensions. The platform’s protection system is intended to allow the vehicle to survive explosions caused by anti-tank mines and other explosive devices.

The armored vehicle’s structure is designed to withstand the blast effects generated by explosive threats while protecting the crew compartment. This type of design approach has become common among MRAP-class vehicles used in modern conflicts where roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are widely employed.

The Barys 6×6 can carry a crew of two along with up to eight soldiers. The vehicle can perform multiple roles including infantry transport, border patrol, armored ambulance missions, and direct fire support.

According to the manufacturer, the platform has been modified to meet specific requirements set by the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan. These modifications include integrated fire-suppression systems, redesigned hatches, and an upgraded mechanical turret.

Additional mounting systems allow weapons and ammunition to be stored both inside the vehicle and externally on the platform. These features enable the vehicle to be configured for different operational roles depending on mission requirements.

The armored vehicle has undergone testing by special units of Kazakhstan’s armed forces in a range of environmental conditions. Trials were conducted in both winter and summer conditions in order to evaluate performance in the country’s extreme climate.

According to the manufacturer, these tests were completed successfully following trials in rugged terrain and harsh seasonal weather conditions typical of Kazakhstan.
