SRT signs $261M deal for maritime surveillance system

Key Points
  • SRT Marine Systems signed a $261 million contract with a sovereign government customer to deliver a national Maritime Domain Awareness surveillance system.
  • The system will integrate multiple sensors and data sources to provide continuous monitoring of maritime activity for security, law enforcement, and maritime safety operations.

SRT Marine Systems announced it has signed a new $261 million contract with a sovereign government customer to deliver a national Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) system, the company said in a statement.

The agreement represents a new addition to SRT’s Sovereign Partnership Programme and will provide the customer with an integrated platform for monitoring activity across its maritime domain.

Maritime Domain Awareness platforms are increasingly viewed as a core capability for states seeking to strengthen border security, maritime safety, and control of fisheries and marine resources.

According to SRT Marine Systems, the newly signed agreement will provide the customer with a national-scale maritime surveillance and intelligence system designed to support a range of operational tasks. These include monitoring maritime traffic, supporting coast guard and fisheries enforcement missions, and improving situational awareness for civil defense and maritime law enforcement authorities.

The system will integrate multiple sensors and operational data sources into a single platform capable of providing a continuous picture of maritime activity. According to the company, the platform is designed to combine data streams from coastal sensors, vessel tracking systems, and other surveillance inputs into an operational environment that can be used by government agencies responsible for maritime security.

As noted by the company, the system will be designed to evolve over time with the customer’s requirements. The architecture allows the integration of additional sensors, data feeds, and operational tools as the customer expands its maritime surveillance capabilities.

SRT Marine Systems is a United Kingdom–based provider of maritime surveillance, intelligence, and navigation safety systems. The company specializes in integrated platforms that allow national authorities to collect and analyze maritime data in real time.

Its Maritime Domain Awareness systems are intended to provide government agencies with a consolidated operational picture covering large maritime areas. These platforms are typically used by organizations such as coast guards, naval forces, fisheries authorities, and maritime law enforcement agencies.

Maritime Domain Awareness refers to the ability of a state to monitor and understand activity across its maritime domain, including territorial waters, exclusive economic zones, and coastal approaches. Achieving this requires combining information from a wide range of sources, including vessel tracking systems, radar networks, satellite data, and coastal monitoring stations.

Modern MDA platforms process this information and present it through command-and-control interfaces that allow operators to identify suspicious activity, track vessels, and coordinate response operations. These systems are increasingly used to address threats such as illegal fishing, smuggling, maritime pollution, and unauthorized incursions into protected waters.

An integrated MDA system works by collecting data from distributed sensors and communication networks and feeding it into centralized processing systems. Software tools then analyze the incoming information, identify patterns or anomalies, and provide operators with alerts or visualized maritime traffic patterns.
