Britain is moving additional military forces, including combat aircraft, to the Middle East in response to rising instability in the region, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Friday.
“We are moving assets to the region, including jets, and that is for contingency support in the region,” Starmer told reporters during a flight to the G7 summit in Canada, according to Reuters.
The United Kingdom already maintains a military presence in the Middle East through ongoing operations in Iraq and Syria, where Royal Air Force (RAF) assets are tasked with counter-terrorism and regional security missions. The new deployment is intended to reinforce those efforts amid growing uncertainty across the region.
According to a spokesperson for the prime minister, preparations began early Friday after intelligence and operational assessments indicated a potential escalation. “Crews began deployment preparations on Friday morning, when it was clear the situation in the region was deteriorating,” the spokesperson said.
The reinforcement includes additional fighter aircraft and refueling assets. One RAF Voyager aerial refueling tanker was tracked flying over Jordan and heading toward Syrian airspace, according to flight monitoring data from Flightradar.

The British Ministry of Defence has not released further details regarding the number of aircraft involved or specific deployment locations. However, the move reflects a broader effort by the UK to maintain operational readiness in the event of further conflict or the need for rapid intervention.
The RAF’s ongoing presence in the region is part of Operation Shader, the UK’s long-running mission targeting Islamic State remnants and supporting stability operations in coordination with international partners. The addition of new aircraft suggests that London is preparing for a wider range of contingencies beyond the existing mission scope.
While the UK has not indicated that it is preparing for direct military action, officials have framed the deployments as precautionary steps to ensure flexibility in a rapidly evolving environment.
“Further refuelling aircraft from British bases have been deployed, and additional fighter jets will be sent,” the prime minister’s spokesperson confirmed.
Regional tensions have increased in recent days following Israeli airstrikes deep inside Iranian territory.
