J-15 naval fighter jet crashes in China

A People’s Liberation Army Navy’s J-15 carrier-based fighter jet crashed during a training flight, according to footage captured by eyewitnesses.

Local sources confirmed that the aircraft went down during routine exercises, although the precise details regarding the location and circumstances remain unconfirmed.

“One J-15 fighter aircraft crashed during training. The pilot successfully ejected and was unharmed,” local reports stated. Authorities have indicated that there were no reported casualties or injuries resulting from the crash.

Preliminary assessments suggest the crashed jet was an earlier, standard version of the J-15, rather than the more recent J-15T or J-15D variants. Reports also indicate that the fighter did not take off from an aircraft carrier, based on the crash location.

The J-15 is China’s primary carrier-based fighter, originally developed from the Russian Sukhoi Su-33. It serves as the main combat aircraft aboard China’s aircraft carriers, including the Liaoning and Shandong.

Equipped to carry a wide range of armaments, the J-15 supports missions involving air superiority, naval strike, and ground attack roles. Its introduction significantly expanded the operational capabilities of China’s naval aviation forces.
