B-52 bombers complete Euro-Atlantic mission

U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress bombers assigned to the 20th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron (EBS) have departed RAF Fairford, England, after successfully completing Bomber Task Force (BTF) 25-1.

The squadron returned to its home station at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, following a mission that emphasized military readiness, integration, and global stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.

The BTF 25-1 mission concluded this week and was part of the U.S. Air Force’s ongoing efforts to enhance assurance and deterrence objectives. By conducting strategic bomber operations, the 20th EBS demonstrated the United States’ commitment to defending Allied interests and deterring adversaries in a region marked by evolving security challenges.

“The 20th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron’s participation in Bomber Task Force missions highlights our ability to project power and maintain readiness,” said a U.S. Air Force official. “These operations are vital for ensuring the U.S. and its Allies remain prepared to address global challenges collaboratively.”

The 20th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron deployed to RAF Fairford, England, Nov. 4 – Dec. 12, 2024 for Bomber Task Force 25-1.

“This Bomber Task Force has provided unique and invaluable training opportunities for our Airmen, immersing them in complex operational scenarios with NATO Allies and partners,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jared Patterson, 20th EBS commander. “BTF deployments help Airmen hone their technical skills and ensure they’re postured to respond to emerging threats.”

Throughout the deployment, Airmen were able to see firsthand how they support deterrence and assurance operations, strengthening their commitment to service and personal growth.

“My role in this deployment has been extremely fulfilling and has given me a new outlook on the Air Force as a whole,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jarred Roberts, 20th EBS hydraulics journeyman. “As a member of the ADVON [Advanced Echelon] team, I was considered a vital asset to the setup and preparation for the BTF. I had the opportunity to integrate with Airmen from many different AFSCs [Air Force Specialty Codes], which allowed me to gain a different perspective on their career fields and how they support the mission.”

During the deployment, the 20th EBS conducted nine operations with multiple NATO and partner nations, including the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Italy, Czech Republic and Morocco.

The B-52 Stratofortress, a long-range heavy bomber, remains a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force’s strategic arsenal. Its versatility enables it to perform a wide range of missions, from strategic deterrence to conventional strike operations. Equipped with advanced communication systems and capable of carrying both precision-guided and nuclear weapons, the B-52 plays a critical role in maintaining global stability.

The deployment of the 20th EBS to RAF Fairford underscores the strategic importance of forward-deployed forces. By integrating with Allied and partner nations, Bomber Task Force operations demonstrate the shared commitment to collective defense and regional security.

As the 20th EBS completes its return to Barksdale AFB, the squadron’s successful mission reinforces the U.S. Air Force’s ability to project power globally and sustain strong partnerships in the face of evolving threats.
