China vows to accelerate PLA modernization by 2027

The Chinese military has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving its centenary goals for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 2027, pledging to accelerate modernization and enhance combat readiness.

The announcement, made during China’s annual national legislative session, underscores Beijing’s determination to build a world-class military force amid rising geopolitical tensions.

Wu Qian, spokesperson for the delegation of the PLA and the People’s Armed Police Force, emphasized that reaching the centenary objectives and advancing military capabilities are “strategic imperatives” in China’s broader efforts to modernize its national defense. “We must dedicate our efforts to ensuring that we achieve our goals with strong performance on schedule,” Wu stated.

The objectives set for the PLA centenary involve intensifying troop training, enhancing combat preparedness, and modernizing operational capabilities. According to Wu, the armed forces plan to strengthen new-domain military forces, integrating advanced combat capabilities that align with evolving warfare trends. The focus includes improving military preparedness across all domains and bolstering the PLA’s ability to conduct informatized and intelligent warfare.

China’s military modernization has been a focal point of national defense policy, with increased investments in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber warfare, and hypersonic weaponry. The PLA has also ramped up naval and air force operations in contested regions, including the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, leading to heightened concerns among neighboring countries and Western powers.

The 2027 milestone represents a significant step toward China’s broader goal of achieving a fully modernized military by 2035 and becoming a world-class fighting force by 2049, the centennial of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The latest statements from China’s defense establishment reinforce Beijing’s ambitions to challenge global military dominance and project power beyond its borders.

China’s pursuit of military modernization comes amid escalating tensions with the United States and its allies over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and territorial disputes in the Indo-Pacific. The PLA’s rapid expansion and military drills have drawn responses from regional powers, with increased defense cooperation among the U.S., Japan, Australia, and the Philippines.

While China has consistently framed its military developments as defensive and necessary for national security, the pace and scale of its military buildup continue to fuel concerns about its long-term strategic intentions. As the PLA moves toward its 2027 centenary goals, regional and global observers will closely monitor China’s military advancements and their implications for international stability.
