Designed by Azerbaijani engineers of Ministry of Defense Industry (MODIAR) the experimental variant of the first mine resistant vehicle “Tufan” had been publicly demonstrated.

“AzeriDefense” informs, the demonstration of “Tufan”, which was created by National Aerospace Agency (NAA) of the Ministry of Defence Industry, was attended by the management of MODIAR, representatives of Armed Forces and other power structures.
Speaking about the vehicle, advisor to the minister of defense industry Azad Mammadov said that the weight of “Tufan” is 12 300 kg, payload – 3000 kg, personnel – 2 persons. The vehicle can carry 8 troopers. The length of the vehicle is 7360 mm, width – 2440 mm, height – 2820 mm. The speed of “Tufan” – 85 kmph, coverable distance – 900 km. The vehicle’s equipped with 230 horse power 8 cylinder, 4 cycle, water-cooled KAMAZ Euro-2 engine and mechanical transmission.
NAA director general Alchin Shirinzadeh noted that for its design “Tufan” differs from other MRAPs produced by MODIAR and utilized by Azerbaijani Army. The vehicle meets 3-rd level of STANAG 4569 standard of NATO. The armor protects from 7,62×51 mm AR M993 ant materiel bullets, shot from 30 meters in horizontal position under 360 degrees corner; 155 mm land mine blasted at the distance of 60 meter and its blast wave; anti tank mines (equivalent of 8 kg TNT).
After testing it is planned to design ambulance, radio electronic warfare, police, surveillance versions of this vehicle based on the same chassis.
The top of the vehicle is equipped with remote controlled weapon module created by NAA. Weapon module is equipped with 12.7×108 mm NSVT machine gun and smoke grenades. Weapon module contains 300 bullets and shooting range is 2000 meters. All software of weapon module, which also includes day and thermal cameras and laser distance meter, was made by local specialists. The guidance range of day camera – 5000 meter, night camera – 800 meter, lazer distance meter – 2000 meter. It is possible to attach various caliber weapon on universal designed module.
