The U.S. Navy has announced that the USS Savannah (LCS 28) showcased its capabilities with a live-fire demonstration on October 24th in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

According to a press release, during the exercise, a containerized launching system fired an SM-6 missile at a predetermined target, highlighting the adaptability and firepower of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS).

This successful demonstration emphasizes the potential for integrating containerized weapons systems into afloat platforms for engaging surface targets.

The containerized missile launcher, better known as MK 70 Payload Delivery System, is a modular launcher system with four strike-length MK.41 VLS (Mark 41 Vertical Launching System) cells housed in a 12-meter (40 ft) container.

Produced by Lockheed Martin, the MK 70 PDS system was unveiled in September 2021.

The insights gained from this exercise will contribute to ongoing efforts in testing, evaluating, and further integrating containerized weapons systems for naval applications.
