German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced during a national briefing following the European Council meeting in Brussels that another IRIS-T SLM fire unit has been delivered to Ukraine.
This aligns with earlier commitments by Germany to supply the sixth IRIS-T SLM system, along with two additional IRIS-T SLS launchers, before the year’s end.
The IRIS-T SLM is a state-of-the-art ground-based air defense system designed to counter aerial threats, including drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles. Its ability to provide continuous protection over wide areas makes it an essential tool for safeguarding critical infrastructure and ground forces.
The IRIS-T SLM has already demonstrated its combat effectiveness in Ukraine, where it has been deployed to protect civilians and infrastructure from ongoing Russian air attacks. German-supplied units have played a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities amidst escalating aerial threats.

Germany has emerged as the second-largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine, following the United States. This represents a significant shift from Berlin’s earlier reluctance to provide arms.
The deployment of additional IRIS-T systems strengthens Ukraine’s ability to counter diverse aerial threats, providing a layered air defense strategy. The SLM variant offers medium-range protection, while the SLS launchers contribute to short-range interception capabilities. Together, these systems enhance the overall resilience of Ukraine’s airspace.
