Syria shoots down Israeli Skylark surveillance drone

Images released by Hezbollah media channel shows Israel Elbit Skylark downed above Quneitra province, Syria

The Syrian and Lebanese media released a photo of Israel Elbit Skylark surveillance drone downed above Quneitra province, Syria.

According to the Syrian military, the Skylark was downed over Quneitra in the Syrian Golan Heights by Syrian Defence Forces. Lebanese terror group Hezbollah posted pictures of the downed drone on its social media pages.

The Israeli military said the circumstances of the incident were being checked, but that there were no immediate suspicions that classified data could be retrieved from the device.

The Skylark I is a Miniature UAV. It is designed as a manpacked system for tactical surveillance and reconnaissance. The Skylark is launched by hand. The payload consists of a daylight CCD or optional FLIR for night operations. During operation, it sends real-time video to a portable ground station. Recovery involves a deep stall maneuver, landing on a small inflatable cushion. It has a range of 20/40 km.

In January the Israel Defence Forces confirmed that one of its Skylark drones fell on the Lebanese side of the border.Lebanese media said that the drone fell close to the border village of Alma Shaab in the mountainous Naqoura region.
