SpearUAV develops tactical drone interceptor

Israeli defense technology company SpearUAV has introduced the VIPER I (Interceptor), a new encapsulated unmanned aerial system (UAS) designed to enhance top-attack protection for tactical forces, armored vehicles, and fixed installations.

The system represents the latest in loitering munition technology, developed to counter threats such as hostile UAS, loitering munitions, and other airborne attackers targeting ground forces from above.

The VIPER I is engineered for versatile deployment, able to be launched from SpearUAV’s Multi Canister Launcher (MCL) without the need for additional modifications. This capability allows for seamless integration across a wide range of tactical platforms, including dismounted troops and armored vehicles, providing continuous aerial protection even while forces are on the move. The compact design of the VIPER I enhances deployment efficiency, offering a low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) footprint, critical for battlefield operations.

Built on the core technology of SpearUAV’s VIPER family of loitering munitions, the VIPER I features automated high-speed maneuvering capabilities and AI-driven target tracking to intercept fast-moving threats. The system autonomously calculates optimal responses based on real-time battlefield intelligence, allowing it to neutralize airborne dangers efficiently and precisely.

Yiftach Kleinman, EVP Commercial at SpearUAV, explained the company’s mission, stating, “SpearUAV has recently been recognized as the most promising company in the Israeli defense industry. Our focus is on leveraging Israeli hi-tech innovation to enhance warfighter capabilities and survivability. VIPER I exemplifies our commitment to delivering effective encapsulated solutions that meet the evolving challenges faced by maneuvering forces.”

The VIPER I system can be integrated with third-party sensors and warheads, allowing it to adapt to a variety of operational scenarios. This flexibility ensures that the interceptor can be customized to suit specific tactical needs. The Multi Canister Launcher, which can deploy multiple VIPER systems from any military platform, further boosts operational flexibility and minimizes operator exposure by allowing rapid deployment even while on the move.

The VIPER I, along with SpearUAV’s broader range of loitering munition solutions, integrates with command and control systems (C4i), enhancing intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities for tactical units. This integration delivers improved lethality and survivability for forces operating in dynamic and contested environments.
