Russian Defence Ministry Refused to Buy Superjet-100 Aircraft

The Russian Defense Ministry refused to buy modern Sukhoi Superjet 100 twin-engine regional jet for Air Force and NAVY aviation.

That was reported by Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov.

The Superjet-100 was to replace Russia’s aging fleet of Tu-134 and Tu-154 jet airliner. Currently, there are 21 Tu-154 and 36 Tu-134 aircraft in service by the Russian Defense Ministry. But Russian Defense Ministry has decided that Superjet-100 not suitable for military service because of reasons related to aircraft design and performance. First of all, engines of Superjet-100 mounted below the wing, that not suitable for military aircraft. This arrangement does not protect the engines and wing structure against damage from foreign objects during takeoff from runways poor quality.

The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is a modern twin-engine regional jet with 108 passenger seats. Its maiden flight was conducted on 19 May 2008.

Russia looks to buy new turboprop upgraded Ilyushin Il-114 or An-148 aircraft designed by the Ukrainian Antonov company and produced by Russia’s Voronezh Aircraft Production Association.
