Aliyev claims Azerbaijan’s troops destroy two Armenian S-300 air defense systems

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev claimed that the country’s armed forces destroyed two S-300 surface-to-air missile systems belonging to Armenia during the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to the President, the Armenian Armed Forces received heavy damage.

In addition, the President of Azerbaijan said that in the event of an attack on the oil pipelines of Azerbaijan, Yerevan will receive a “heavy response.”

“Successful military operations of Azerbaijan to liberate from occupation continue successfully. The Armed Forces of Armenia want to expand the geography of clashes, to involve the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) in the conflict. Therefore, they fire on settlements from the territory of Armenia, inciting us to retaliate. But we are not taking measures against the civilian population, ”Aliyev said.

“Over 200 tanks were destroyed, two S-300 systems, 33 tanks were taken as trophies,” Aliyev said.

Video and still photos released by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense shows strikes on two Armenian S-300 air defense systems.

Additional reports by Clash Report state that armed unmanned combat aerial vehicles (include Turkish-made Bayraktar TB-2 drones and Israeli Harop loitering munition) of Azerbaijan have destroyed $1 billion worth of Armenian military equipment.

According to a tweet from Oryx, satellite imagery confirms that earlier footage of a loitering munition closing in on a S-300 indeed resulted in significant damage to the system, meaning two S-300 sites have been hit so far, one of which located in Nagorno-Karabakh and the other in Armenia.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The area experienced flare-ups of violence in the summer of 2014, in April 2016 and this past July. Azerbaijan and Armenia have imposed martial law and launched mobilization efforts. Both parties to the conflict have reported casualties, among them civilians.
