SAMP/T surface-to-air air defense missile system  and 25 military personnel arrived in southern Kahramanmaraş province in Turkey late Sunday, deployed by Italy as part of NATO’s package of assistance measures set to be fully applied prior to the July 8-9 Warsaw Summit.

The recently deployed Italian air defense system in Kahramanmaraş will replace the German Patriot missile systems that finished their three-year, mandated mission. A senior NATO official previously told Daily Sabah during the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels that Italy is planning to send SAMP/T missiles – the latest generation of surface-to-air air defense missile systems – to fight DAESH.

ASTER 30 SAMP/T is the 21st century’s main, mobile anti-aircraft defence weapon for theatre protection. It protects sensitive sites and deployed forces against missile threats (TBM, stand off, cruise missiles, ARM) and aircraft, replacing all existing medium range ground-to-air systems.

The ASTER 30 SAMP/T system is designed to meet medium and long range air defence needs (force projection, protection of high-value areas and area protection). It can operate in stand alone mode or can be integrated in a co-ordinated network.
