China, Myanmar hold first diplomacy & defense “2+2” consultation

The first China-Myanmar Diplomacy and Defense “2+2” Consultation is held in Naypyidaw, capital of Myanmar, from Nov. 24 to 25, 2016.

China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin, Deputy Chief of the Joint Staff Department under China’s Center Military Commission (CMC) Gen. Xu Fenlin, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin and Chief of the No.1 Special Operations Bureau of the Tatmadaw Htun Htun Naung co-chaired the consultation.

Both sides hold that China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors and the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries has been developing well. It is in line with the common interests of both countries to maintain peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border, cope with emergencies properly and boost prosperity and development of the border areas.

Both sides hold candid and friendly talks and reached extensive consensuses on issues related to the peace and development in border areas, such as maintaining China-Myanmar border peace and stability, providing constructive help to Myanmar’s peace process, fighting against illegal border-crossing activities jointly and promoting trade contacts and so on.

Chinese and Burmese sides expressed that they have paid high attention to the situation in the north of Myanmar, and claimed clearly that they oppose any action of provoking military conflicts.

The two sides also appealed to the parties concerned to cease military operations immediately, calm the tensions as soon as possible, and restore peace and tranquility in the China-Myanmar border areas.

Gen. Xu Fenlin said in the consultation that it is the sacred duty of the Chinese military to safeguard national sovereignty and security and maintain peace and stability in the border region.

We hope and require that all conflicting parties concerned can cease fire and solve the problem peacefully, Gen. Xu added.

He stressed that the Chinese military will not let anyone to destroy the peace and stability in the border region or harm the lives and property of the Chinese people in border areas.

It is learnt that such consultation will be held in turns every year by China and Myanmar. The second consultation will be held in China in 2017, and the specific date and site will be made through diplomatic channels.
