Griffin helicopter of Royal Air Force burst into flames on a Snowdonia peak

A Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) B412 Griffin HT1 helicopter made a precautionary mountain top landing after an apparent technical fault prior to catching fire

There were 4 military personnel and 1 civilian in the aircraft plus 1 military on the mountain top. All 6 safe & unharmed.

Photographs show a fire on the mountain top. Yr Aran is a mountain peak on a ridge radiating south from Snowdon, Wales’ highest mountain.

All five people who were on board the training aircraft from RAF Valley on Anglesey have been reported safe and did not need hospital treatment.  This was reported by www.bbc.com

Emergency services were called at about 13:45 BST to Yr Aran, a mountain peak on a ridge south of Snowdon. Walkers reported seeing 10ft-high (3m) flames.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene, along with a coastguard helicopter.

The Bell 412 is a twin-engine utility helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter. It is a development of the Bell 212 with the major difference being the composite four-blade main rotor.

Bell Griffin HT1 is an Advanced training helicopter based on the Bell 412EP, operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) since 1997 as an advanced flying trainer. Operated by the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury and the Search and Rescue Training Unit at RAF Valley.
